Do you remember your first pet? Was it a fish? We thought so.
Alongside dogs and cats, indoor fish remain ever popular animal companions.
As committed upcyclers, we’ve been hunting around for some original aquarium projects for those who share their homes with a fish, whether a humble goldfish or some of their more exotic cousins.
Here are six of the best of our finds…
1. A basic plastic bottle fish tank
Perfect for temporarily housing your fish friends when you’re flushing the water out of their main home. It really doesn’t get any simpler than this. All you’ll need is a bottle, a knife, some fish friendly rocks and vegetation to make it cosy and—it should go without saying—some water.

2. A luxury temporary home
This is still a temporary home but a slightly a more elegant one. Consider it a luxury RV for your fish as opposed to having them slum it in a tent. You’ll need a glue-gun, a knife, a plate, some tubing and a large water bottle. Source: rndmbits.blogspot.fr
3. Plastic bottle aquarium filter
If your fish already have a spacious tank, why not give them the marine-world’s answer to air-conditioning with this bubbly project? Source: wikihow.com
4. Plastic bottle minnow trap
Looking for something to put in your fish tank? You can catch minnow or small fry with just two plastic bottles and a length of string. And it’s equally fun to take the trap down to a river or lake shore. Source: instructables.com
Okay, okay, we know tadpoles aren’t fish, but they are fish-like and that’s why a bottle tadpole terrarium is something you should set your nurturing instincts on. A halved plastic bottle will provide the perfect amount of surface area for the little swimmers to thrive in. Source : parents.com
Finally, if keeping a fish seems like far too much responsibility, this artificial fish tank makes for a fun and harmless upcycled craft project for young and old alike. Source: wikihow.com
