The American designer Garth Britzman is the creative genius behind the green project “POP Culture.” His goal is to raise awareness about recycling through his artistic installations.
Garth Britzman is a pioneer of numerous eco-responsible projects, which he conducts in partnership with Lincoln University in Nebraska. His passion is creations with a human scale. He likes working with plastic to construct his compositions, and, in so doing, confronting the viewer with his own consumer behavior. Through his works, he shows his support for the concept of “zero waste.” In 2014, during the Nebraska State Fair, he created a temporary installation of an interactive dome made entirely of piles of water and soda bottles. The work was designed to evolve over the course of the event. With the contribution of the fair attendees, he collected more than 12,000 in 11 days.
The Magnitude of Recycling
That’s what Garth Britzman wants to convey. Plastics, especially non-biodegradable, are the scourge of our time. However, with a little imagination and playfulness, he proves that we can change our habits. In 2012, with the help of 3D modeling software, he created a canopy to protect cars from the sun. The architecture of the installation seems simple, but it’s actually quite complex, because it creates the impression of movements that resemble waves. To create this effect, the wires bearing the bottles must all be of different lengths. This required hours of calculations to determine a system of coordinates on a grid. The arrangement of bottles also plays with color, added by tinting the water inside. The result echoes an underwater world, with the goal of “stimulating creative alternatives for the recycling and re-use of materials,” in the words of Garth Britzman. After 200 working hours assembling and suspending over 1500 used bottles, the innovative idea made waves when it was presented to the public.
